Competition Description

When it was built at the start of the 16th century, the plan had been to make Thornbury Castle one of the grandest palaces in England, but the Duke of Buckingham, its owner, was beheaded in 1521. What remains is magnificent, nevertheless, and the luxury hotel has undergone a multimillion-pound refurbishment. The gardens have been extensively replanted, and the executive chef, Carl Cleghorn, uses the produce to create inventive, balanced and delicious food.

The interiors pay homage to the ambitious Tudor architecture, with free-standing baths and spacious walk-in showers added. Many bedrooms have views on to the 14th-century church next door, so it’s a setting to make anyone with a sense of history feel giddy.
