Fancy yourself as a bit of wordsmith? Are you forever regaling your friends and family with tales from your travels? If the answer’s yes, then our Travel Writing Competition is just the thing for you. One of the country’s most prestigious competitions of its kind, this is your chance to see your name in print.
For your chance to win, simply write no more than 500 words on an inspiring travel experience, which could be anywhere from the far-flung shores of Fiji to a hike in the Yorkshire Dales.
We want to see flair and finesse with your words, and don’t forget to capture the essence of the magazine: a strong sense of place, immersive experiences and authentic storytelling. So, what are you waiting for?
The Prize
Courtesy of G Adventures, the winner will embark on a truly epic eight-night trip across southern Africa. This classic itinerary showcases some of the best the continent has to offer: journey from Namibia, across Botswana and onto Zimbabwe on an authentic African adventure that takes in the elephants of Chobe National Park; San Bushmen in the blazing Kalahari; the thundering roar of Victoria Falls; and the Okavango Delta, explored by dugout mokoro canoe. A knowledgeable chief experience officer will ensure your accommodation provides the most authentic experience possible, including camping beneath starry skies for a night you’ll never forget.

Prize Terms & Conditions
Winner of National Geographic Travel Writing Competition 2019 is entitled to one (1) free place on guaranteed departures on the following tour: Botswana & Victoria Falls Adventure (DADF) (no substitutions) with return economy flights for up to £750 departing before 31 July 2020 and must be booked before 31 October 2019 at 23:59 EST. Chosen departure date must already have four other full paying passengers confirmed on the tour to be eligible for this prize.
Not valid for travel or booking between 15 December 2019 and 4 January 2020.
Winner must at least be 18 years of age or older in order to claim the prize and must be a resident of the United Kingdom and must be paid (if applicable) in Pound sterling – GBP.
The flights and tour must be taken in one trip, and both require 30 days advance booking and are subject to availability. Prize flights will not accrue any frequent flyer points on the prize travel. An upgrade cannot be purchased on airfares with cash or frequent flyer points, and stopovers are not permitted. Once any ticket has been issued, the date, origin and destination cannot be changed.
Winner is responsible for carrying valid photo IDs, passports, and any other required documentation, prior to departure.
Prize applies to the listed itinerary only and excludes optional or additional services such as any airfare not expressly included in the itinerary or as part of the prize, transfers, pre- or post-tour accommodation, “My Own Room” or “My Own Tent,” insurance, amendments, and all incidentals, meals, gratuities, taxes, fees, levies, and transportation not expressly included in the itinerary.
Redemption of prize: i) is subject to availability, ii) is valid on new bookings only, iii) may not be combined with any other offer or discount, iv) has no cash value, v) is non-transferable, non-refundable and non-exchangeable vi) is not eligible for “Lifetime Deposit” nor “Guaranteed Departure,” and vii) is non-commissionable if book by or through an agency.
Winner must book the G Adventures prize directly with G Adventures by phone and/or email, quoting the winning promo code which will be sent to the winner.
G Adventures must agree to the chosen departure dates and the prize may be substituted for a prize of comparable value by G Adventures’ in its sole discretion.
Passport, visa, and vaccination procurement and costs are the sole responsibility of the winner.

No liability is accepted if the winner cannot travel because of insufficient or incorrect documentation.

General Terms and Conditions
Entrants agree to permit National Geographic Traveller (UK) to publish the winning and runner-up entries in the magazine, on the National Geographic Traveller (UK) website and on the National Geographic Traveller (UK) social media channels. The winning and runner-up entries may also be used by National Geographic Traveller (UK) and the competition sponsors in promotional material relating to the competition. Winners must co-operate fully for publicity purposes if so required. Entries submitted must be original work and must not have been entered into any other writing competition, or been published in any other publication or website. Entrants must own the copyright to any work entered. Entrants will retain copyright to their work.
The prize draw is open to residents of the UK or Republic of Ireland aged 18 and over. No purchase necessary. Competition closes 8 July 2019 at 11.59pm GMT.
The competition will be judged by National Geographic Traveller (UK) editorial director, Maria Pieri, and editor, Pat Riddell. The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
